Resumo

This study described the prevalence of physical inactivity and its associated factors in adolescents from the municipality of Macapá-AP/Brazil. The sample comprised 970 elementary school students of both genders, aged between 10 and 15 years (51.6% females). The short form of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire was used to measure physical inactivity, defined as less than 300 minutes/week of moderate and/or vigorous physical activity. The independent variables analysed included: age, housing type, forms of school transportation (active and passive), and daily television and video game play time. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess the factors associated with physical inactivity. The prevalence of physical inactivity in adolescents was 68.1% (95% CI: 65.7-71.9) and was significantly higher in females (69.2%, 95% CI: 66.7-72.9). The factors associated with the prevalence of physical inactivity were passive school transportation and long periods of daily video gaming in adolescents of both genders. Wood houses were associated with a higher prevalence of physical inactivity in males, while older age and long periods of television viewing were associated in females. The prevalence of physical inactivity was high. Adolescents of both genders who used passive school transportation and spent long periods of time seated were more exposed to physical inactivity, suggesting that public policies related to health promotion could act as facilitators in the adherence to active behaviours among adolescents from the North of Brazil.
